Delays are continuing at one of the UK's main ports – Felixstowe – three weeks after a new terminal operating system was installed.
In an update issued on 3 July the port said that it was “making good progress on a number of key issues” that were related to discharge of containers from vessels and road haulage.
However, the news was less good when it comes to the loading the news is not so good.
“Although our discharge cycle is working at near pre-implementation productivity levels, we continue to experience issues in our load cycle, including both ship and train loading. This is affecting our overall productivity which resulted in a lower level of service being delivered to our customers with consequences further up the supply chain,” the port said.
Maersk Line, which has a dedicated "Felixstowe Contingency" web page, said yesterday: "Sustained delays both shipside and landside at the Port of Felixstowe continue to affect our UK operations. Productivity shipside is showing signs of improvement however we are still experiencing delays to the berthing line up."
The vessel Maersk Kokta on its TA3 service will omit its call at the UK port with imports discharged in Antwerp and connected with the MSC Kleven. The MSC Savona on AE6 service will delayed by four days in berthing, while the MSC Valencia on the TA2 service is delayed with ETA yet be confirmed.
The port said apecialist teams are being supported by experts from Hutchison Port's head office in Hong Kong.
The port said that last week it handled across its quay roughly 90% of the average weekly volumes it did prior to the installation of the new system.
“Our focus and immediate priority now is on vessel and rail load cycles and yard efficiency,” the port said.
The new operating system saw container lines experiencing significant delays and there were reports of 16 hour long tailbacks of trucks to enter the port on 13 June.
Freight forwarders impacted by the delays have been warned they are unlikely to receive compensation as they are not direct customers of the port.
