The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Mr Amitabh Kumar, IRS (IT:87), Additional Director-General (Shipping), Ministry of Shipping, as Director-General (Shipping), as per an official communiqué.
Mr. Amitabh Kumar is a 1987 batch, highly decorated IRS officer. He has made exceptional contributions to the Tax Administration system in India and overhauled / streamlined various tax policies to make them user friendly and widely acceptable. He served in various capacities in the field formation of Income Tax Department; as Dy. Secretary and Director in Ministry of Home Affairs; and in various positions in attached directories of Central Board of Direct Taxes. Prior to the current assignment, he worked as Principal Commissioner of Income Tax in Vadodara.
Mr. Kumar received numerous awards and recognitions from the Central Board of Direct Taxes for his various innovations – the prominent among them being the Tax Return Preparer Scheme (TRPS). He is also the recipient of G Files’ Governance Award 2014 for Exceptional Contribution for changing the orientation of tax administration from enforcement to payer service and for introducing several innovative schemes in this field.
