The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is making rapid strides in developing six Gati Shakti cargo terminals across the region, officials confirmed on Thursday. Among these, the Baihata terminal in Assam’s Kamrup district is set to become the first operational facility, marking a major boost to freight logistics in Northeast India.
Constructed at an estimated cost of ₹245 crore, the Baihata terminal is in its final stages, awaiting essential safety clearances before commencing operations. Once functional, it is expected to significantly strengthen the freight ecosystem and support industries across the region. The initiative aligns with the Centre’s 2022 policy aimed at promoting modern, privately-participated logistics infrastructure.
The NFR’s ongoing expansion builds on earlier terminals commissioned at Moinarband and Cinnamara. In February, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the development of six new cargo terminals under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, underscoring the government’s focus on improving multimodal connectivity and enhancing logistical efficiency in the Northeast.
