Paradip Port in Odisha has created history by clocking the fastest-ever 100 million metric tonnes (MMT) cargo throughput in a fiscal year since its inception. The milestone was achieved on 27th November, marking the 9th consecutive year the port has crossed the 100 MMT benchmark.
The port registered 100.15 MMT, reflecting a 4.78% year-on-year growth, and achieved the feat 12 days earlier than the last fiscal. In FY 2024–25, the 100 MMT mark was reached on 9th December 2024. This year, Paradip Port accomplished it in 241 days, significantly ahead of the 253 days taken last year.
According to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the port’s performance underscores its operational excellence amid challenging market conditions. “Faster operations, system improvements, and consistent stakeholder support have helped PPA stay ahead,” the Ministry stated. Growth in key cargo categories—coastal thermal coal, container cargo, gypsum & flux, POL, and steel—continues to reinforce PPA’s position as a leading coastal shipping hub.
Coal handling, which accounts for 45% of total cargo, grew by 3.76%, while containerised cargo surged 32%. Gypsum & flux volumes rose by 24%, steel cargo by 35%, and POL by 31%, all on a year-on-year basis.
PPA Chairman PL Haranadh, while interacting with local media, expressed gratitude to Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for his guidance and support. He congratulated port officers, employees, user industries, stevedores, steamer agents, trade unions, and PPP operators for their collective contribution to the achievement.
He also acknowledged the support of the Government of Odisha, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Indian Railways, Customs, and other agencies.
With a sharp focus on efficiency and growth, Paradip Port Authority is now poised to achieve an all-time high cargo throughput in the current fiscal year.
