Japanโ€™s leading shipping company, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), has signed its first annual LNG bunkering agreement for car carriers at the Port of Vancouver with Seaspan Energy Ltd., marking a significant milestone in the expansion of cleaner marine fuel infrastructure on the U.S. West Coast.

The first LNG bunkering under the agreement was successfully completed on April 29, further strengthening MOLโ€™s presence in North Americaโ€™s growing LNG bunkering network. The development follows the companyโ€™s first LNG bunkering operation on the West Coast of North America by a Japanese shipping line in March 2025.

With North America continuing to serve as a major trade corridor for automobile transportation, the establishment of a stable LNG fuel supply system has become increasingly critical as more LNG-fueled car carriers enter service. MOL stated that the agreement will help create a seamless and reliable LNG supply framework across the region.

The company reiterated its commitment to expanding LNG bunkering service areas and supporting the transition toward greener maritime logistics and supply chains.

Under the โ€œMOL Group Environmental Vision,โ€ the company has identified the adoption of alternative fuels as a key pillar in achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. LNG is expected to play a vital role in MOLโ€™s short- to medium-term strategy for reducing carbon emissions and advancing a low-carbon shipping industry.
