Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has commissioned a 13.4-km railway line at its Lanjigarh facility in Odisha’s Kalahandi district to augment logistics infrastructure, the company said.
The railway line has been commissioned in alignment with the upcoming 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) alumina refinery at the Lanjigarh site.
Vedanta Aluminium stated that the new railway line is intended to ensure seamless inbound and outbound movement of raw materials and commodities while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 262 tonnes annually.
The company also announced the addition of six new loop lines within the in-plant yard along with an upgraded electronic signalling system. The expanded infrastructure will enable the plant to handle up to 25 million tonnes of raw materials and commodities annually and accommodate up to 20 rakes per day.
Sunil Gupta, Chief Operating Officer, Vedanta Aluminium, said, ‘The commissioning of a 13.4 km railway line at Vedanta Lanjigarh is a transformative step will streamline logistics, reduce turnaround time, and support our long-term production goals, while also reinforcing our commitment to digital innovation and safe operations.”
The project includes a shift from manual Relay Room Interlocking (RRI) to Electronic Interlocking (EI) for signalling, the company said. Vedanta Aluminium said the transition is part of its digitisation and operational efficiency drive.
The company stated that the development supports its long-term Net Zero Carbon goal targeted for 2050 or earlier and is aimed at achieving 100 per cent rail co-efficiency in logistics operations at the Lanjigarh facility.
