After a gap of five and a half months, Bangladesh has resumed onion imports from India through its land ports, aiming to curb spiraling prices in the domestic market.
The first consignment of 150 tonnes of onions arrived yesterday afternoon via Hili Land Port in Dinajpur, while another 660 tonnes carried by 23 trucks entered through Sonamasjid Land Port in Chapainawabganj in the evening, officials confirmed.
The last import of Indian onions through Hili Land Port took place on March 2, when just 29 tonnes arrived. Imports had since halted as local onion prices fell, reducing demand for Indian produce.
With prices rising again, Bangladeshi importers sought approval from the Ministry of Agriculture, which has now allowed imports to resume.
