The Gujarat government has invited Expressions of Interest (EoIs) for the development of three new shipyards, a mega shipbuilding cluster, and six greenfield ports, marking a significant step in strengthening the state’s maritime infrastructure and shipbuilding capabilities.
The proposed projects are aimed at attracting private investment, expanding port capacity and positioning Gujarat as a leading hub for shipbuilding, ship repair and maritime logistics. The initiative aligns with India’s broader vision of enhancing domestic shipbuilding under the Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
The three shipyards are expected to cater to the construction and maintenance of a wide range of commercial vessels, while the planned mega shipbuilding cluster will provide integrated infrastructure for ship construction, equipment manufacturing, ancillary industries and maritime services. The cluster is also expected to generate substantial employment and promote technology-driven growth in the sector.
The six proposed ports will enhance cargo-handling capacity along Gujarat’s coastline, improve regional connectivity and support the state’s growing industrial and export activities. The new facilities are expected to strengthen multimodal logistics networks and facilitate efficient movement of bulk, container and liquid cargo.
Industry stakeholders believe the projects will reinforce Gujarat’s position as India’s leading maritime state, leveraging its long coastline, established port ecosystem and strategic location on key international shipping routes. The EoI process is expected to attract interest from domestic and global investors, paving the way for large-scale infrastructure development and long-term growth in the maritime sector.
