Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has launched an indigenous Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) for the Indian Navy, marking another milestone in India’s naval modernisation programme and the country’s drive towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing. The launch underscores CSL’s growing role in delivering advanced warships under the Government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Designed to enhance the Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities, the vessel is equipped to detect, track, and neutralise enemy submarines operating in coastal and shallow waters. The ship will also undertake a range of secondary missions, including search and rescue, low-intensity maritime operations, surveillance, and coordinated coastal defence.

The ASW-SWC has been built with a high level of indigenous content, incorporating advanced sensors, weapons, communication systems, and navigation equipment sourced from Indian defence manufacturers. The programme is expected to strengthen the domestic defence industrial base while supporting technology development and employment across the country’s shipbuilding ecosystem.

The launch forms part of a larger order for multiple ASW Shallow Water Craft being constructed for the Indian Navy to replace ageing platforms and enhance maritime security. Once commissioned, the vessels will significantly improve the Navy’s ability to safeguard India’s coastline, protect strategic maritime assets, and counter underwater threats in the Indian Ocean Region.

Cochin Shipyard has continued to expand its portfolio of defence shipbuilding projects, delivering a range of naval platforms while investing in advanced shipbuilding technologies and infrastructure. The latest launch reinforces the shipyard’s capability to execute complex naval programmes and contribute to India’s long-term defence preparedness.

The successful rollout of the indigenous anti-submarine warfare ship highlights the steady progress of India’s naval shipbuilding sector and reflects the country’s commitment to strengthening indigenous defence production, enhancing maritime security, and reducing dependence on imported military platforms.
