Indian Railways recorded a strong operational performance in July, registering a 9% year-on-year increase in freight loading while also carrying more passengers across its network. The growth reflects sustained demand for rail-based cargo transportation and continued recovery in passenger travel, reinforcing the railways’ vital role in supporting India’s economy and logistics sector.

According to official data, freight loading during the month was driven by higher movement of key commodities, including coal, cement, iron ore, steel, foodgrains and fertilizers. Increased industrial activity, infrastructure projects and power sector demand contributed to the rise in cargo volumes, while improved operational efficiency enabled the railways to handle additional freight traffic.

Passenger traffic also witnessed healthy growth during July, supported by higher demand for both long-distance and suburban travel. Seasonal travel, tourism, business movement and improved train availability helped boost ridership across various categories of passenger services.

Indian Railways has continued to focus on expanding freight capacity through dedicated freight corridors, infrastructure upgrades, digital freight management systems and improved terminal facilities. These initiatives have enhanced turnaround times, increased network efficiency and strengthened the competitiveness of rail transport against other modes of logistics.

The strong July performance aligns with the government’s broader objective of increasing the modal share of rail in freight movement while providing reliable and affordable passenger services. With ongoing investments in network expansion, rolling stock and station modernisation, Indian Railways is expected to maintain its growth momentum in both freight and passenger segments during the remainder of the financial year.
