A delegation from the US Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) has reviewed development and expansion plans for the Port of Colombo, as the two sides discussed the port’s role in regional and international maritime trade.
The delegation examined ongoing and planned infrastructure projects aimed at improving the port’s capacity, operational efficiency and ability to handle growing container volumes.
Colombo is a major transshipment hub in the Indian Ocean, serving cargo flows between South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and other international markets. Its location has helped the port attract major global shipping lines and strengthen its position in regional container trade.
Discussions around port development come as shipping networks continue to evolve and ports across the region invest in additional capacity and modern handling infrastructure. Improving connectivity and operational efficiency will be important for Colombo as competition among Indian Ocean transshipment hubs increases.
The FMC delegation’s visit also provides an opportunity to exchange views on maritime trade, port operations and developments affecting global shipping.
Sri Lanka is seeking to strengthen Colombo’s position as a competitive regional maritime hub, with continued investment in infrastructure and logistics expected to support the port’s long-term growth.
