Chennai Port Authority has operationalised an Empty Container Yard (ECY) within the Port’s Custom Bound Area from September 1, 2026, in a significant capacity augmentation initiative aimed at improving container-handling efficiency and creating additional capacity for laden and transshipment cargo.
The initiative enables empty containers to be shifted out of the main container terminal areas and accommodated at the dedicated yard, thereby releasing valuable terminal space for handling additional laden and transshipment containers.
The initiative has been implemented through a collaborative working model involving Chennai Port Authority, container terminal operators and shipping lines, with appropriate measures put in place to safeguard the Port’s revenue interests.
By facilitating the movement of empty containers to the dedicated yard, the initiative is expected to optimise the utilisation of existing terminal infrastructure, improve operational flexibility and support growth in container throughput.
The Chairperson, Chennai Port Authority, has appreciated and thanked the container terminals and shipping lines for their support, cooperation and collaborative efforts in operationalising the initiative.
The Empty Container Yard initiative highlights Chennai Port’s focus on capacity augmentation through better utilisation of existing infrastructure, demonstrating that increasing capacity need not always depend on creating new physical assets. Through operational innovation and stakeholder collaboration, existing port infrastructure can be utilised more efficiently to support higher cargo volumes and strengthen Chennai’s position as a major container gateway.
