Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) in Haryana are expanding their access to international markets with food exports reaching Canada, creating new opportunities for farmers to participate in global trade.
The initiative is helping aggregate farm produce from growers, improve market access and connect producer groups with overseas buyers. Direct export opportunities can also enable FPOs to explore better-value markets while strengthening the commercial position of participating farmers.
Canada offers a sizeable market for Indian food products, supported by demand from the Indian-origin community as well as wider consumer interest in Indian agricultural products. Haryana’s FPO-led exports could therefore help diversify the state’s agricultural market base.
FPOs play an important role in bringing together small and marginal farmers, enabling them to collectively undertake activities such as procurement, grading, packaging, processing and marketing. Such aggregation can make it easier to meet the quality, packaging and documentation requirements of international markets.
The expansion into Canada also highlights the growing focus on strengthening farmer participation in India’s export ecosystem. Building export-oriented supply chains can help improve post-harvest handling and encourage greater value addition closer to production centres.
With continued support for quality standards, logistics, certification and international market linkages, FPOs in Haryana could explore additional overseas destinations and product categories, further expanding opportunities for farmers in the state.
