Bihar’s makhana exports are expanding into new international markets, with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitating a shipment of 1 metric tonne of makhana to Greece.

The shipment marks another step in efforts to strengthen the global market presence of Bihar’s makhana, one of the state’s key agricultural products. APEDA’s support is aimed at connecting producers and exporters with overseas markets while promoting Indian agricultural products internationally.

Makhana, also known as fox nut or gorgon nut, is widely cultivated and processed in Bihar. The product has gained increasing demand in international markets because of its use as a snack and its positioning as a value-added food product.

The export to Greece provides Bihar’s producers and exporters with an opportunity to develop new market linkages in Europe. Greater access to overseas buyers could encourage increased processing, packaging and value addition within the state’s makhana supply chain.

APEDA has been supporting the export of agricultural and processed food products through market development initiatives, trade promotion and facilitation of international buyer linkages. Such initiatives are intended to help Indian exporters meet international quality, packaging and food-safety requirements.

The latest shipment highlights the potential for Bihar’s makhana sector to diversify its export destinations. Continued market development and support for quality standards could help exporters explore additional European and global markets for the product.
