APM Terminals Aarhus and the Port of Aalborg have launched a new rail freight service, strengthening the connection between two key Danish logistics hubs and providing shippers with an additional inland transport option.
The new service is designed to improve the movement of containers between the ports, supporting more efficient cargo flows and greater flexibility for customers. By linking the facilities through rail, the initiative can help reduce reliance on road transport for suitable cargo movements.
The rail connection is expected to benefit importers and exporters by providing an alternative for moving goods between the Aarhus and Aalborg areas. It can also support more predictable inland transportation and improve connections between port terminals and regional distribution networks.
For APM Terminals Aarhus, the service further expands its multimodal logistics offering and strengthens the terminal’s role in Denmark’s freight network. The Port of Aalborg, meanwhile, gains a direct rail connection that can improve access to wider shipping and logistics services.
Rail transport can also contribute to more sustainable freight operations by moving larger volumes of cargo in fewer road movements. This is increasingly important as European logistics operators and cargo owners seek to improve supply-chain efficiency while reducing transport-related emissions.
The new service reflects growing efforts by European ports to strengthen rail connectivity and develop integrated road, rail and maritime networks. Improved hinterland connections are becoming increasingly important as ports seek to expand their role beyond vessel handling and provide more end-to-end logistics solutions.
The Aarhus–Aalborg rail service is therefore expected to enhance cargo connectivity between the two locations while giving businesses greater flexibility in planning their inland freight movements.
