Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate seven major projects at the Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial) on October 2.

The commissioning of the Import Cargo Terminal, Digi Yatra system and airport emergency service will be held on October 2. The launch of the work on international terminal development, aero launch, golf tourism and electronic security system will be held on the day.

“The development projects have been designed after considering the factors like the rise in passenger turnout, potentials in tourism sector and agriculture development,” said a Cial official. As part of the international terminal development, a new apron with 15 lakh sq ft area will be set up and eight new aerobridges will be constructed. Once the work is over, the number of parking bays will go up to 44.

Commissioning of the Import Cargo Terminal will increase the cargo handling capacity to 2 lakh metric tonnes a year. The existing cargo area can be completely used for export purposes. This is expected to give a push to the state government’s move to identify more international markets.

The aero launch, which has been christened as ‘0484 Luxury Aero Launch’, will be the largest aero launch in the country. It will have 42 luxury guestrooms, restaurant, mini-conference hall, boardroom, gym, spa, etc. The airport fire and rescue services will be modernized.
