Madhya Pradesh (MP) is making significant strides toward establishing itself as a major air cargo hub, aiming to match Delhi. Leveraging its strategic geographical location and robust infrastructure, the state government is committed to developing an ecosystem that supports comprehensive air cargo operations.
MP’s central location in India, combined with a well-developed network of railways, metro systems, and expressways, positions it as an ideal candidate for air cargo development.
Dr. Mohan Yadav, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh said, “Presently, our air cargo services are thriving, with over USD 6 trillion worth of various products being processed and more than 35% of global air cargo operations being facilitated here. Madhya Pradesh boasts seven airports capable of handling air cargo, and we are envisioning the development of our own air cargo hub, similar to Delhi, to position the state as a future hub of opportunities.”
Moving tirelessly towards realizing this vision, the state recently launched its first international air cargo services, which will initially cater to flights with a capacity of 3-5 tonnes, but have plans for future expansion. The service commenced from Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar airport with the first consignment from Ranbaxy and Tata International, bound for Vietnam.
The cargo complex has been built on 3,800 square feet of space with a provision for expansion. It comprises a warehouse, office spaces for Customs and GSEC officials, an unloading section where goods are screened using an X-ray machine, and the loading section from where the trolleys are taken to the aircraft hanger. There is also a separate section for imported goods and a strong room for storing precious cargo.
Apart from this, all seven airports in the state have been identified as potential cargo hubs, ensuring comprehensive coverage and connectivity.
The state government has demonstrated its commitment by allocating 16% more budget for the development of air cargo infrastructure compared to the previous year. This significant investment underscores MP’s determination to transform into a leading air cargo hub.
“To support business growth, we have initiated the ‘Future Ready Madhya Pradesh’ project, focusing on enhancing our infrastructure,” said Dr. Yadav.
The “Future Ready Madhya Pradesh” desk, a dedicated initiative by the state government, aims to position MP as a future business center and major air cargo hub. By promoting trade, unlocking state resources, and boosting economic growth, this desk plays a crucial role in the state’s air cargo sector development.
Comparing MP to Delhi, the national capital which already has a well-established air cargo infrastructure and serves as a major hub for both international and domestic shipments, requires a model that’s tailored to the advantages of the state.
MP aims to mirror Delhi’s success by leveraging its unique geographical and infrastructural strengths. Currently, MP transports products worth USD 6 billion via air cargo, highlighting its immense potential for growth. With a focus on promoting trade and increasing employment opportunities through the construction of a cargo hub, MP’s economic growth rate exceeds 20%, and agricultural development stands at 25%.
It will be safe to say that Madhya Pradesh is on a transformative path to becoming a Delhi-like air cargo hub. Strategic investments, infrastructure development, and a proactive approach to harnessing its potential underscore the state’s commitment to becoming a key player in India’s air cargo industry.
