India’s ship classification society Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) has signed an agreement with the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences to oversee the construction of a new ocean research vessel (ORV) to be built at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd in a step towards bolstering maritime research.

The agreement was signed by Devrup Kabi, Head Ship Building Project Management of IRS and M M Subramaniam, Scientist I/C of Vessel Operation and Management, NCPOR.

“We are excited to contribute our extensive expertise in survey vessel operations to this groundbreaking project,” stated Devrup Kabi, Head SPBM, IRS. “Our deep experience and technical skills will be pivotal in the successful construction of the ocean research vessel in collaboration with NCPOR and GRSE,” he added.

The collaboration highlights the expertise of IRS and NCPOR in enhancing scientific research and exploration within the marine environment. The ocean research vessel is poised to significantly elevate India’s oceanographic research and data capabilities, aligning with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
