As the deadline for reviewing the import management system of laptops and IT products approaches, authorized companies have imported items valued over USD 4 billion this fiscal year, according to an official statement.
In 2023-24, imports were USD 8.4 billion, predominantly from China. Last October, the government introduced an import management/authorization system to monitor IT hardware shipments without affecting market supply.
The new regime offers valid authorizations until September 30, 2024, and allows multiple consignments. Approvals totalling nearly USD 10 billion were cleared on November 1, 2023, for major brands like Apple, Dell, and Lenovo. Future plans will align with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s guidance.
