Hutchison Ports BEST has installed the first electric reach stacker in Southern Europe at its Barcelona port.

This new acquisition is part of a larger initiative to minimise the port’s carbon impact, making it the most sustainable and efficient terminal in southern Europe.

The installation of the electric reach stacker, made by Sany, marks a key step towards decarbonising the terminal’s operations, hence reducing GHG emissions into the environment.

Guillermo Belcastro, CEO of Hutchison Ports BEST, said: “Society in general and consumers in particular are increasingly demanding the sustainable treatment of products from the point of production to their distribution, including the entire supply chain, and here BEST is already a differentiating factor.

“Currently, each container that passes through the BEST terminal reduces emissions by almost 70 per cent compared to a conventional terminal.”

The implementation of this machine is expected to prevent emissions equivalent to 260 tonnes of CO2e per year thanks to its efficiency and use of electricity from 100 per cent renewable sources.

The Sany reachstacker lifts up to 45 tonnes and stacks up to five containers through its telescopic arm.

The BEST terminal will use the machine to handle containers in the area parallel to the railway terminal within the marine terminal, as well as in the area facilitating the storage of empty and full containers.

In July, the Port of Barcelona launched its first Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system at Hutchison Ports’ BEST container terminal.
