ABB has secured a contract from Cochin Shipyard Limited to supply power, propulsion, automation, and digitalization systems for two electric harbor tugs being built for Polestar Maritime. Scheduled for delivery in 2027, the vessels will operate at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority under Phase 1 of India’s Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP).
The electric tugs will feature ABB’s Onboard DC Grid™ platform, PEMS™ power and energy management system, and ABB Ability™ Remote Diagnostic System for Marine, enabling efficient battery utilization, optimized energy consumption, and enhanced operational reliability.
The project supports India’s GTTP initiative, which aims to transition the country’s harbor tug fleet from diesel-powered vessels to cleaner alternatives between 2024 and 2040. It also strengthens JNPA’s efforts to achieve Green Port status while advancing maritime decarbonization.
Cochin Shipyard CMD Jose VJ said ABB’s expertise in marine electrification and automation made it the preferred technology partner for the project. ABB Marine & Ports President Rune Braastad described the contract as a significant milestone in supporting India’s efforts to reduce emissions from port operations through sustainable maritime technologies.
