Besco Ltd Wagon Division, an Indian manufacturer of freight and passenger wagons, has signed a contract with Indian Railways to supply 800 freight wagons for a total of 3.4 billion rupees (approximately $400 million), this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The delivery will be carried out in three stages: the first batch is expected to be delivered by the end of 2024, the second by June 2025, and the third by the end of 2025.

This contract is part of the extensive efforts of Indian Railways to modernize and expand its rolling stock.

In March 2024, IR had already ordered 6,700 BOSM standard freight wagons from other Indian rolling stock manufacturers. These wagons will be produced at facilities in Kolkata.

The total cost of both orders amounts to 28.6 billion rupees (approximately $345 million).

This move underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to improving the quality and efficiency of its wagon fleet, ultimately contributing to the development of the national economy and enhancing service levels for passengers and freight transport.
