The Central Government has appointed Prashant Jeevan Patil, an IAS officer of the Telangana cadre, as Deputy Director General (Director level) in the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping), Mumbai, under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, strengthening the leadership of India’s apex maritime regulatory authority.
According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) under the Central Staffing Scheme, the Competent Authority has approved Patil’s appointment for a five-year tenure from the date he assumes charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
The DoPT has requested the Government of Telangana to relieve Patil immediately so that he can take up his new assignment in Mumbai without delay.
The appointment comes at a significant time for the Directorate General of Shipping, which plays a pivotal role in regulating India’s shipping sector, promoting maritime safety, implementing international maritime conventions, overseeing seafarer welfare and training, and supporting the country’s maritime growth agenda.
Patil, who is currently serving with the Telangana Government, is expected to bring extensive administrative experience to the maritime sector as the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways continues to advance reforms aimed at improving shipping governance, enhancing ease of doing business, and strengthening India’s position as a global maritime hub.
The DoPT has also directed the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways to furnish a copy of the formal appointment notification once it is issued.
Patil’s appointment reflects the Centre’s continued emphasis on deploying experienced civil servants to key leadership positions in strategic sectors such as shipping and maritime administration, which are central to India’s expanding port-led development and logistics initiatives.
