The Centre has emphasised the need to ensure that the benefits of India’s new-generation Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) reach micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across the country, enabling them to expand their global market presence and strengthen export performance.

Dr C. Vanlalramsanga, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, said this while addressing a state-level MSME awareness and outreach programme on ‘Leveraging Free Trade Agreements (FTAs)’ organised by the Tripura Government’s Industries and Commerce Department at Pragya Bhavan, Agartala.

He said India has signed several new-generation FTAs and that creating awareness among MSMEs about the opportunities and provisions under these agreements is essential to ensure wider participation in international trade.

Highlighting Tripura’s export potential, Dr Vanlalramsanga pointed to the state’s strategic proximity to international borders. Tripura has around 3.7 lakh MSMEs and exported goods worth approximately USD 15 million in the previous year, he noted.

He stressed the importance of identifying niche international markets and promoting value-added products to improve export earnings. He also highlighted various Central Government initiatives, including digital reforms and the Export Promotion Mission, aimed at strengthening the country’s export ecosystem and supporting businesses in accessing global markets.

Tripura Industries and Commerce Secretary Kiran Gitte also addressed the programme, outlining the state government’s support measures for MSMEs. Director Deepak Kumar delivered the welcome address.

Officials from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Export Promotion Councils and other agencies participated in the programme.
