    Centre Eyes ₹45,000 Crore Boost for Border Railway Network

    The Central Government is planning to invest around ₹45,000 crore to strengthen railway infrastructure along India’s border regions, aiming to enhance strategic connectivity, improve logistics and support faster troop and cargo movement in sensitive frontier areas. The proposed investment forms part of a broader effort to modernise transport infrastructure and bolster national security through improved rail connectivity.

    The planned projects are expected to focus on constructing new railway lines, doubling and electrifying existing routes, upgrading stations and improving connectivity in border states adjoining China, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar. Several strategically important rail links in the northern and northeastern regions are likely to receive priority under the investment programme.

    Officials believe enhanced railway infrastructure will significantly improve the movement of defence personnel, military equipment and essential supplies while also promoting economic development in remote border districts. Better rail connectivity is expected to reduce travel times, strengthen supply chains and provide year-round transport access to regions that currently rely heavily on road networks.

    The investment also aligns with the government’s broader infrastructure agenda, which includes expanding multimodal logistics networks, increasing freight capacity and integrating railway projects with highways, inland waterways and ports. Improved border rail links are expected to complement initiatives such as the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan and Dedicated Freight Corridors, creating a more resilient transport ecosystem.

    Apart from strategic and defence benefits, the proposed railway projects are expected to stimulate regional trade, tourism and employment by improving access to underserved areas. Industry experts believe the investment will strengthen India’s logistics competitiveness while enhancing the operational readiness of the country’s border infrastructure for both commercial and strategic purposes.
