French container shipping company CMA CGM has announced higher Freight All Kinds (FAK) rates for cargo moving from Asia to the Mediterranean and North Africa, alongside new peak season surcharges on selected international trade routes.
The revised Asia–Mediterranean rates will apply from November 1 to November 14, 2026, covering shipments from major Asian ports to the Western Mediterranean, Adriatic, Eastern Mediterranean, Black Sea and North Africa. The new tariffs apply to dry containers, refrigerated cargo, out-of-gauge shipments and paying empty containers.
Revised freight rates
Under the new rate structure, CMA CGM has set the following rates:
- Western Mediterranean: US$3,900 per 20-foot container and US$4,900 per 40-foot container.
- Adriatic: US$4,000 per 20-foot container and US$5,000 per 40-foot container.
- Eastern Mediterranean: US$4,200 per 20-foot container and US$5,200 per 40-foot container.
- Black Sea: US$4,200 per 20-foot container and US$5,200 per 40-foot container.
- North Africa: US$5,300 per 20-foot container and US$7,100 per 40-foot container.
The announced rates include basic freight, bunker-related surcharges, emissions trading system charges and low-sulphur surcharges. Origin and destination terminal handling charges, safety and security fees, and other applicable local charges may be billed separately.
Additional peak season surcharges
CMA CGM is also introducing a US$150-per-container peak season surcharge from November 1 for dry cargo originating on the west coast of South America and moving to specified destinations, including the east coasts of Central America and South America, Mexico, the Caribbean, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
A separate surcharge of €150 per TEU from November 7 will apply to shipments from Northern Europe to North Africa. Spain and Portugal are excluded from the origin range, while Morocco is excluded from the destination range.
The changes will increase freight costs for some exporters and importers during the November rate period. Shippers and freight forwarders should confirm applicable tariffs, cargo eligibility and additional local charges with CMA CGM before finalising bookings.
