COSCO Shipping’s Hainan hub has recorded a remarkable 70% growth in cargo volumes, driven by increased regional trade flows and enhanced port operations. The surge highlights Hainan’s growing importance as a strategic logistics hub in China, connecting domestic production centers with international markets.
Port officials said the increase was supported by expanded terminal capacity, improved cargo handling efficiency, and stronger demand for containerised and bulk shipments across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and beyond. Investments in digitalisation and automation at the hub have also helped reduce turnaround times and boost throughput.
COSCO noted that the Hainan hub is now playing a key role in the company’s broader regional network, supporting faster, more reliable services and catering to rising import and export volumes. Analysts said the volume jump underscores the hub’s potential to become a major gateway for international trade, while also reflecting COSCO’s strategy to strengthen operational capabilities in high-growth regions.
The company added that continued expansion plans and infrastructure upgrades are expected to further increase capacity and reinforce Hainan’s status as a pivotal node in global shipping networks.
