DP World is expanding crane capacity at its London Gateway and Southampton container terminals in the UK, strengthening cargo-handling capabilities at two of the country’s key gateways.
The investment is aimed at increasing terminal productivity and supporting growing container volumes. Additional crane capacity will help the terminals handle larger numbers of containers and improve vessel and landside operations.
London Gateway and Southampton are important components of DP World’s UK port network, connecting British importers and exporters with major international trade lanes. Enhancing their handling capacity is expected to provide greater operational flexibility as cargo demand evolves.
The additional equipment will support faster container handling and help terminals manage peak-period volumes more efficiently. Improved crane availability can also contribute to reduced vessel turnaround times and smoother cargo flows through the ports.
The investment comes as UK ports continue to modernise infrastructure and improve efficiency in response to changing shipping patterns and increasingly large container vessels. Terminal operators are investing in equipment and technology to increase capacity while maintaining reliable service levels.
For shipping lines and cargo owners, stronger crane capacity can improve schedule reliability and provide greater confidence in port operations. It can also support the handling of additional services as carriers adjust their UK network deployments.
DP World’s investment reflects its broader strategy of developing its UK logistics and port infrastructure. By expanding equipment capacity at London Gateway and Southampton, the company is positioning both terminals to accommodate future growth in containerised trade.
The upgrades are expected to strengthen the UK’s supply-chain infrastructure and improve the ability of the two gateways to handle rising cargo volumes efficiently.
