Dr. Ashok Kumar Panda officially assumed charge as Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) on May 09, 2026, marking a significant leadership transition at one of India’s leading Maharatna public sector enterprises.

A seasoned steel industry professional, Dr. Panda’s association with SAIL spans more than three decades since he joined the company as a Management Trainee. Over the years, he has played a pivotal role in strengthening the organization through various leadership positions, including Director (Finance) and additional charge of Director (Commercial).

During his tenure, Dr. Panda contributed significantly towards enhancing operational efficiency, improving profitability, driving market expansion, and supporting strategic transformation initiatives across SAIL’s business verticals.

As the new CMD, Dr. Panda has outlined a forward-looking vision focused on expanding SAIL’s production capacity to 35 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA), strengthening workplace safety standards, ensuring long-term raw material security, and increasing the share of value-added steel products in the company’s portfolio.

Industry stakeholders view his appointment as a positive step towards supporting India’s growing infrastructure and industrial requirements, particularly in sectors such as railways, transportation, construction, and manufacturing.
