Electric mobility company Energy In Motion Limited (EIM) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Sorigin Green Mobility for the deployment of 500 electric heavy commercial vehicles (e-HCVs) over the next two years, marking a significant push towards the electrification of India’s heavy-duty freight transportation sector.
The partnership aims to accelerate the adoption of electric freight mobility across major cargo-intensive freight corridors in the country, including the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) ecosystem. The deployment will prioritise routes with high cargo movement, where vehicle utilisation, energy costs and operational efficiency are critical factors.
Sorigin Green Mobility is already operating EIM electric tractors at JNPT and Tuticorin Container Terminal. Under the proposed collaboration, EIM will supply its Ashwa 55-tonne electric tractors, supported by an integrated ecosystem of charging infrastructure, battery-swapping networks and energy-management solutions.
The integrated offering is designed to improve fleet utilisation, minimise refuelling-related downtime and enhance the commercial viability of electric freight transportation, particularly for port-based logistics and industrial supply chains.
Commenting on the partnership, Narendra Murkumbi, Managing Director of EIM Ltd, said the electrification of heavy commercial transport would depend not only on the availability of electric vehicles but also on an integrated ecosystem that makes them commercially viable for fleet operators.
He described Sorigin as an existing valued customer and said the 500-vehicle deployment agreement represented a significant step-up in heavy electric logistics across key freight corridors in India. The combination of electric tractors, charging and battery-swapping solutions, and energy-management capabilities would address critical operational requirements, including vehicle utilisation, turnaround time and energy costs.
Gautam Rekhi, Director, and Aarav Tanti, Co-Founder of Sorigin Green Mobility Private Limited, said the partnership would combine EIM’s integrated vehicle and energy platform with Sorigin’s fleet operations to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission freight transportation across ports and industrial supply chains.
The collaboration is expected to strengthen the transition towards sustainable heavy-duty logistics, reduce the carbon footprint of freight transportation and support the development of cleaner, more efficient supply chain networks across India.
