Fincantieri has laid the keel for Viking Libra, the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, at its Ancona shipyard in Italy. The vessel will be the 14th ocean-going newbuild for Viking Ocean Cruises and is scheduled to debut in December 2026.
Designed with sustainability at its core, Viking Libra will feature a hydrogen propulsion system and advanced fuel cell technology capable of producing 6 megawatts of power. The ship will operate with zero harmful emissions, enabling it to sail through some of the world’s most environmentally sensitive regions.
The vessel’s maiden voyage is planned from Piraeus, Greece, on a 10-day itinerary across the eastern Mediterranean. It will continue operating in the region through the end of 2026 before moving to Northern Europe for winter voyages in early 2027.
Shipyard officials and Viking’s leadership hailed the keel-laying as a milestone in cruise industry decarbonization, showcasing how hydrogen can be integrated into passenger shipping on a commercial scale.
Although its propulsion system sets it apart, Viking Libra’s overall design aligns with Viking’s latest fleet additions, including Viking Vela (delivered in 2024), Viking Vesta (2025), and Viking Mira (scheduled for 2026). These ships feature hybrid propulsion systems designed to be hydrogen-ready, making future retrofits possible.
Viking’s commitment to green innovation will continue with Viking Astrea, another hydrogen-powered cruise ship slated for delivery in 2027, reinforcing the company’s long-term sustainability strategy.
