In a dramatic late-night incident, two freight trains collided and derailed in Boulder, Colorado, causing substantial damage to a nearby bridge and spilling fuel.
The collision, which occurred at approximately 11:15 p.m. on Thursday near Boulder Creek, resulted in injuries to two conductors, who have since been treated and released from the hospital with minor injuries, according to BNSF Railway spokesperson Kendall Sloan.
Extensive clean-up operations are underway as officials investigate the cause of the crash and work to mitigate fuel contamination. The Boulder Police Department confirmed that earlier fears of fuel leaking into Boulder Creek were allayed when it was discovered that the fuel had been absorbed by sand spilled from one of the train cars.
