Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), a Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, has secured a major commercial shipbuilding order from Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) for the construction of four Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs), strengthening India’s indigenous maritime manufacturing capabilities.
GRSE received the Notification of Award (NOA) on July 30, 2026, for the design, construction and delivery of the four offshore support vessels. The contract marks a significant expansion of the shipyard’s commercial shipbuilding portfolio and reinforces its growing presence in the offshore energy and support vessel segment.
The vessels will be built in accordance with the rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) and are designed to support offshore exploration and production activities. Each vessel will measure approximately 80 metres in length, have a 20-metre beam, a deadweight capacity of 3,000 tonnes, an endurance of 45+3 days, and a clear deck area of around 650 square metres, enabling them to undertake a wide range of offshore logistics and supply operations.
A notable feature of the vessels is their advanced hybrid propulsion system, which includes electrically driven azimuth thrusters integrated with a Lithium-Ion Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The hybrid architecture is expected to improve fuel efficiency, support dynamic positioning operations, manage peak power loads, provide spinning reserve, and enhance emergency response capabilities while reducing environmental impact.
The project is expected to contribute significantly to India’s offshore energy infrastructure and aligns with the country’s focus on self-reliance in maritime manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
With more than six decades of shipbuilding experience, GRSE has delivered over 800 platforms, including 118 warships, to the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and friendly foreign nations. The latest ONGC order further strengthens the company’s position in the commercial and offshore vessel market while showcasing its capability to build technologically advanced and environmentally sustainable vessels.
