Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT) has won two contracts from HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) to develop cryogenic fuel tanks for 12 new LNG-fuelled container vessels on behalf of CMA CGM.
Under the new orders, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and HD Hyundai Samho (HSHI) will each construct six containerships. Each ship has a capacity of 15,500 TEU and has LNG tanks of 12,700 cubic meters.
These tanks will integrate GTT’s Mark III Flex membrane containment technology. Deliveries are expected for the second quarter of 2027 and the second quarter of 2028.
GTT noted that using LNG as a fuel assures compliance with pollution restrictions for nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides, CO2, and particulate matter, notably the international MARPOL3 agreement.
The technology company estimates that choosing LNG to power a large 15,000-containership saves around 25,000 tonnes of CO2 per year compared with heavy fuel oil propulsion.

In February, the CMA CGM Group took the delivery of the CMA CGM Mermaid, the first ship in a series of 10 new 2,000 TEU containerships powered by LNG.
