India’s imports of chemicals and fertilisers from Egypt surged 325% year-on-year to $627 million during January–August 2026, compared with $147 million in the corresponding period last year, according to Egypt’s Chemical and Fertilisers Export Council. The increase amounted to approximately $480 million.
The sharp rise made India the third-largest destination for Egyptian chemical and fertiliser exports, after Türkiye and Italy. India accounted for around 7.6% of Egypt’s total exports in the sector during the eight-month period.
Fertilisers and pesticides dominated the shipments, valued at approximately $552 million, or nearly 88% of the total. Other exports included inorganic chemicals, petrochemical products and miscellaneous chemicals.
The increase reflects growing trade opportunities between India and Egypt, particularly in agricultural inputs and industrial chemicals. Egypt’s overall chemical and fertiliser exports also recorded growth, rising 30% year-on-year to $8.255 billion during January–August 2026.
Khaled Abu El-Makarem, chairperson of the Chemical and Fertilisers Export Council and the Egyptian-Indian Business Council, highlighted the potential to expand trade, industrial cooperation and investment between the two countries.
The council is working to provide exporters with market intelligence, promote business-to-business meetings and identify additional opportunities in India. An economic event involving Indian counterparts is also being planned to strengthen commercial ties.
The growing trade flow offers scope for deeper cooperation in chemicals and fertilisers. However, diversifying the range of products exported to India and increasing the share of higher-value-added goods will be important for sustaining growth.
