Ministry of Commerce and Industry said on September 4 that the global demand for Indian spirits is on the rise, and the Agricultural and Processed Food Export Development Authority (APEDA) is spearheading efforts to tap into this growing market. APEDA, under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, is targeting $1 billion in export revenue for Indian alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages over the next few years, it said.

Currently, India ranks 40th globally for alcoholic beverage exports, the ministry said.

In a significant milestone for Indian spirits, Godawan Single Malt Whisky, crafted in Rajasthan, India, is preparing to make its debut in the United Kingdom. This artisanal whisky represents a key step in India’s strategy to enhance its global footprint in the beverage sector.

Godawan Single Malt Whisky’s introduction to the UK market follows its successful participation in the International Food and Drinks Event (IFE) in London in March 2024. This event was a precursor to the whisky’s official launch and marked the beginning of exports to the UK.

The ministry said this initiative not only aims to boost India’s global presence but also supports local agriculture. The six-row barley used in producing Godawan is locally sourced from the Alwar region, enhancing the income of local farmers through the backward linkages created by this venture, it further stated.
