Beating the slowdown expected during an election month, the Indian Railways continued to register highest ever freight loading in May 2024.
An official statement said the national transporter carried 139.16 million tonnes (MT) of freight in May 2024. This is 3.6% higher than 134.16 MT loading achieved in May 2023. An official statement said, Rs 15,230.90 crore freight revenue was clocked during May 2024, up from Rs 14,641.83 crore in the same month of fiscal 2023-24.
With this, the national transporter has clocked the 56th straight month of highest ever freight loading, beginning October 2020.
Cumulative freight loading for April and May fiscal 2024-25 stood at 267.47 MT.
Coal continued to remain the most carried commodity on the national transporter at 72.01 MT, followed by iron ore at 14.61 MT.
For the full fiscal ending March 2024, Indian Railways loaded 1591 MT freight up from 1512 MT in the preceding fiscal. Records of railway electrification, new lines, and track replacement were also made during the fiscal 2023-24.
Within goods loading, the Railways ferried 787.61 MT of Coal, 180.95 MT of Iron ore, 153.80 MT of Cement, and 114.36 MT as Balance Other Goods for the full fiscal 2023-24.
Official said this achievement follows ‘Hungry For Cargo’ initiative of Indian Railways to improve service delivery at competitive prices.
