Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), one of the world’s top classification societies and a full member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), will turn 50 in April 2025, marking half a century of commitment to maritime safety, quality, and innovation.

The organisation began the year-long celebrations on its foundation day, 4 April, by unveiling a series of initiatives.

A ship classification society verifies ships for their seaworthiness.

IRS launched its new strapline, ‘Powered by Passion. Driven by Values’, a statement that reflects the organisation’s pursuit of excellence, fuelled by unwavering dedication and enthusiasm. While passion drives every endeavour, integrity, honesty and respect serve as the foundational pillars of IRS, the organisation said in a statement.

IRS also launched a new flag, symbolising the organisation’s commitment to global maritime interests.

It also unveiled the 50th year commemorative logo, which symbolises progress, honouring the organisation’s illustrious history while embracing the future. A compass and collaborative motifs are embedded in the logo, evoking movement and progress, reflecting the evolution of IRS over the past five decades.

“In celebrating 50 years of excellence, Indian Register of Shipping reflects on its rich heritage and looks ahead with enthusiasm and determination,” said Arun Sharma, Executive Chairman.

“With the introduction of our 50th anniversary logo, a new strapline and other initiatives, we are reaffirming our commitment to advancing maritime progress. We are grateful to our stakeholders, partners, and employees for their unwavering support through the decades,” Sharma added.

As part of its golden jubilee celebrations, IRS will host several events, initiatives, and collaborations to reinforce its position as a leader in maritime classification and certification.

IRS became a full member of the International Association of Classification Societies, a 12-member group based in London, in June 2010.
