India’s coir exports have recorded an impressive growth of 305.7% in FY2025-26 compared with FY2014-15, highlighting the expanding global demand for coir products and the steady development of the country’s coir industry.
Coir, a natural fibre extracted from coconut husks, is widely used in products such as mats, rugs, ropes, brushes, mattresses, geotextiles and horticultural growing media. Its biodegradable and renewable properties have increased its appeal in international markets as businesses and consumers seek environmentally friendly alternatives to synthetic materials.
India is a major producer and exporter of coir and coir-based products, with Kerala playing a significant role in the industry. The sector also supports employment and livelihoods across coconut-growing regions, particularly among small-scale producers, artisans and manufacturing units.
The substantial increase in exports over the 11-year period reflects the industry’s growing international reach, product diversification and opportunities in sustainable materials. Coir-based geotextiles, erosion-control products and horticultural applications offer additional potential as demand for eco-friendly solutions expands.
Continued efforts to improve product quality, modernise manufacturing, strengthen marketing and explore new overseas markets could further support export growth. Greater value addition and diversification into specialised coir products may also help Indian exporters improve their competitiveness.
The latest export growth underscores the importance of the coir industry to India’s agricultural exports, rural employment and sustainable manufacturing ambitions.
