India’s petroleum product exports rose sharply by 46% during April–August 2026, supported by growing shipments to new overseas markets, according to industry data.

The increase comes as Indian refiners expand their international customer base and redirect supplies towards markets offering stronger demand. The emergence of new destinations has helped offset weaker demand from some of India’s traditional export markets.

India is one of the world’s major refining hubs, with domestic refineries producing substantial volumes of petrol, diesel, aviation turbine fuel and other petroleum products for both domestic consumption and overseas markets.

Exporters have increasingly diversified destinations to manage changing demand conditions and improve market opportunities. This has helped sustain export volumes despite softness in some established markets.

The growth in petroleum exports also reflects India’s strong refining capacity and its ability to supply refined products to international markets. Refiners have been able to respond to changing trade flows by adjusting export destinations based on demand and market conditions.

However, international petroleum markets remain sensitive to crude oil prices, refining margins, freight rates and geopolitical developments. Changes in these factors could influence the pace of India’s petroleum product exports in the coming months.

The strong performance during the first five months of the financial year highlights the growing role of new markets in supporting India’s petroleum export trade and broadening the country’s presence in global refined-product markets.
