India imported steel worth ₹36,194 crore during April–August, with the country continuing to remain a net importer of steel during the first five months of the financial year.

The import trend reflects continued demand from India’s manufacturing, construction, infrastructure and engineering sectors. Domestic steel consumption has remained strong as infrastructure development and industrial activity support demand for both finished and specialised steel products.

India’s steel industry has been working to expand domestic production and reduce dependence on overseas supplies. However, imports continue to meet requirements for certain grades and products that may have limited availability or insufficient domestic production capacity.

The government has also been monitoring steel imports amid concerns over global overcapacity, trade diversion and competition from overseas suppliers. Trade measures and quality-control requirements have been introduced in recent years to support domestic producers while ensuring availability of steel for downstream industries.

Despite being a major global steel producer, India’s position as a net importer during April–August highlights the gap between domestic demand and supply for some steel categories.

The industry is expected to closely watch import trends, international steel prices and trade policies in the coming months as India seeks to balance the interests of domestic steelmakers with the requirements of consuming industries.
