Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has achieved a historic milestone by recording an all-time high cargo growth of 145.84 million metric tonnes (MMT) on National Waterways this year.

Announcing the achievement at Water Voyage Northeast, Shri Sunil Kumar Singh, Vice Chairman and Chairman In-charge of IWAI, highlighted the growing importance of inland water transport in the country’s logistics landscape.

He further noted that the North Eastern Region (NER) is playing an increasingly significant role, with over one million metric tonnes of cargo moved through National Waterways in the region during FY 2024-25.

This growth underscores the government’s continued push to promote sustainable and cost-efficient modes of transport while boosting trade connectivity in the Northeast.
