Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, the entity that runs India’s biggest state-owned container gateway and the country’s second largest, said it handled 6.43 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the fiscal year 2024, the most since the port started operations more than three decades ago.
The container volumes handled at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority rose 6.28 percent in FY24 from 6.05 million TEUs a year earlier.
The overall cargo (both container and non-container) handled at the port located near Mumbai rose 2.79 percent to 85.82 million tonnes (mt) from 83.49 mt a year ago.
Among the five facilities operating at J N Port, Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals Pvt Ltd (BMCT), the terminal run by PSA International Pte Ltd, the sovereign wealth fund of Singapore, posted the highest growth of 18.26 percent, handling 2.027 million TEUs in FY24 from 1.714 million TEUs a year earlier.
Gateway Terminals India Pvt Ltd (GTI), a joint venture between A P M Terminals Management B V, the container port operating unit of Danish shipping and transport giant A P Moller-Maersk A/S and Container Corporation of India Ltd (Concor), posted a 13.98 percent decline in volumes to 1.588 million TEUs in FY24 from 1.846 million TEUs a year ago.
Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal Pvt Ltd (NSICT), the facility run by Dubai’s D P World, handled 1.132 million TEUs, a growth of 3.28 percent over the 1.096 million TEUs handled in FY23.
Nhava Sheva (India) Gateway Terminal (NSIGT), also run by D P World, posted a 2.29 percent decline in volumes in FY24 to 1.111 million TEUs from 1.137 million TEUs a year earlier.
Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminal Pvt Ltd (NSFTPL), the facility jointly owned by J M Baxi Ports and Logistics Ltd (JMBPL) and CMA Terminals Holding, a subsidiary of French container line CMA CGM Group, handled 5,62,153 TEUs while Nhava Sheva Distribution Terminal Pvt Ltd (NSDT), a wholly owned unit of J M Baxi Ports & Logistics Ltd, handled 7,948 TEUs in FY24.
J N Port also handled 7.691 million tonnes (mt) of bulk cargo such as liquids during the year.
