Jammu and Kashmir is set to introduce cruise and passenger services on three rivers under the National Waterways development programme, as authorities look to expand inland water transport and promote tourism.

The initiative aims to develop navigable stretches of selected rivers for passenger movement and tourism-related activities. Cruise services are expected to provide visitors with an alternative way to explore the region while creating new opportunities for local businesses.

The waterways programme will involve improving basic infrastructure and facilities required for safe passenger operations. This could include terminals, jetties, navigation support systems and other passenger amenities, depending on the requirements of individual waterways.

The development of inland waterways is also expected to improve connectivity in areas where water transport can complement existing road networks. Passenger services could provide an additional transport option while reducing pressure on busy road corridors.

The cruise component is likely to strengthen Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism offering by creating river-based experiences and opening new destinations for visitors. Local communities could benefit through employment and related tourism activities.

The initiative forms part of wider national efforts to expand inland water transport and utilise India’s rivers for passenger and commercial movement. With appropriate infrastructure and navigational facilities, the three J&K rivers could emerge as new centres for river tourism and passenger connectivity.
