Kamarajar Port Limited has achieved a significant milestone in port infrastructure development with the inauguration of Coal Berth–3 and the foundation stone laying for the upgradation and operation and maintenance (O&M) of General Cargo Berth–1 (GCB–1). The projects were inaugurated and launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 11, 2026.

Developed at a cost of ₹261.05 crore, Coal Berth–3 has an annual cargo-handling capacity of 9 million tonnes and is designed to handle Capesize vessels with a draft of up to 18 metres. The berth is equipped with two high-capacity ship unloaders and a mechanised conveyor system to facilitate the direct movement of coal to the North Chennai thermal power plants.

The new facility is expected to strengthen coal-handling infrastructure, improve the efficiency of fuel transportation and support the reliable supply of coal to power generation facilities in Tamil Nadu.

Separately, the foundation stone was laid for the modernisation of General Cargo Berth–1 at an estimated investment of ₹221 crore. The project will be implemented under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, focusing on berth upgradation and mechanisation to enhance cargo-handling efficiency and overall throughput.

The modernisation is also expected to reduce vessel turnaround time, improve operational productivity and strengthen the port’s logistics capabilities.

Together, the two projects represent a major step towards expanding Kamarajar Port’s cargo-handling capabilities and improving its operational efficiency. They are expected to support Tamil Nadu’s energy security, facilitate industrial growth and strengthen maritime logistics infrastructure.

The investments further reinforce Kamarajar Port’s role as a key maritime gateway supporting India’s trade, industrial development and economic growth.
