Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has sought fresh Environmental Clearance (EC) and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance for a proposed ₹1,100-crore expansion of its Kattupalli shipyard and modular fabrication facility near Chennai, as the company moves ahead with its infrastructure development plans following the recent investment Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Tamil Nadu government.

According to sources, the proposed expansion is aimed at significantly enhancing the shipyard’s operational capabilities and enabling the company to fully utilise capacities already permitted under earlier environmental approvals.

The project will include the construction of new fabrication and assembly shops, warehouse sheds, office buildings, a skill development centre, residential accommodation for employees, an additional jetty, and other supporting operational infrastructure.

The expansion is expected to strengthen L&T’s shipbuilding and modular fabrication capabilities, catering to growing demand from the defence, offshore energy, maritime and heavy engineering sectors.

The fresh EC and CRZ approvals are required before the company can proceed with the proposed infrastructure additions, despite the project being within the broader framework of the existing industrial complex.

The proposed investment reinforces Tamil Nadu’s growing position as a major hub for shipbuilding, marine engineering and advanced manufacturing, while supporting employment generation and capacity expansion in the state’s maritime sector.
