Under the UDAN initiative, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated Maa Mahamaya Airport in Darima village, Surguja district, Chhattisgarh, on Sunday. The airport is built at a cost of Rs 80 crore and spans 365 acres, is categorized as a 3C VFR category airport and can handle aircraft carrying up to 72 passengers.
The expanded terminal building is designed to handle an estimated capacity of 500,000 passengers annually.
“Under the able leadership of the successful Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the long awaited demand for air connectivity in Surguja division was fulfilled today. The construction of this fully equipped airport will give more impetus to the development of Sarguja division.
Along with this, people of the country will be able to easily connect with the natural tourism here” said Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on a social media platform.

With the new air service, locals will have easier access to big cities, making travel more economical and efficient. Residents of the area have more tourism and business options because of the airport.
It is expected that the airport would increase travel to the Surguja area.
The airport is connected with cities like Jabalpur, New Delhi, Kolkata and Prayagraj and is expected that the airport would increase travel to the Surguja area.
PM Modi also inaugurated two other airports during his Varanasi visit, Rewa in Madhya Pradesh, and Saharanpur in UP under UDAN scheme.
“The combined passenger handling capacity of these three airports increases to more than 2.3 crore passengers annually. The designs of these airports are influenced and derived from the common elements of heritage structures of the region, said an official release.
The official release further said that the prime minister laid the foundation for the construction of a new terminal building, runway expansion, and related projects at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi, which will cost around Rs 2870 crore. Additionally, he launched the New Civil Enclave at the airports of Agra(worth over Rs 570 crore, Darbhanga worth about Rs 910 crore, and Bagdogra worth about Rs 1550 crore.
