Maersk is introducing new Peak Season Surcharges (PSS) on container shipments moving from the Mediterranean to the United States and Canada, with the charges taking effect in October.
For cargo from the West Mediterranean, Maersk will apply a surcharge of US$250 per container, covering 20-foot, 40-foot and 45-foot high-cube dry containers as well as 40-foot high-cube reefer equipment. The new charge will take effect from October 7, 2026, and remain in place until further notice.
The West Mediterranean origin scope covers ports across southern and southeastern Europe and North Africa, including Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Portugal, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria, among others.
Maersk is also introducing a separate PSS for shipments from the East Mediterranean to the United States and Canada, as part of the carrier’s latest series of rate adjustments across Mediterranean trades.
The latest measures come as carriers continue to adjust rates in response to market conditions, seasonal demand and capacity requirements. Maersk has introduced several PSS adjustments across major trades in recent weeks, including routes linking Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas.
For shippers, the additional charges will increase the landed cost of Mediterranean-origin cargo bound for North American markets. The surcharges will remain subject to Maersk’s regular rate reviews and other applicable freight and local charges.
