Maersk has revised its automatic booking cancellation policy, introducing a new timeline for eligible shipments that have not materialised. The updated rule took effect on October 15, 2026, giving the carrier the ability to cancel eligible bookings when five days or more have passed since the first vessel’s estimated time of departure (ETD).
Under the revised policy, bookings that remain unfulfilled beyond the five-day threshold may be automatically cancelled. The change is intended to release unused shipping capacity earlier and improve capacity management and transport planning across Maersk’s global network.
The revised timeline is expected to help the carrier allocate vessel space more efficiently and reduce the impact of bookings that do not proceed as scheduled.
Maersk has advised customers to monitor their booking status closely and contact its customer service team promptly if a shipment is expected to proceed but could be affected by the updated timeline.
The change is particularly relevant for exporters, importers, freight forwarders and logistics providers managing container shipments with pending cargo readiness or documentation. Businesses should strengthen coordination between cargo preparation, customs clearance and vessel schedules to minimise the risk of unexpected cancellations.
Maersk has not stated that every booking will automatically be cancelled after five days; the rule applies to eligible bookings where the shipment has not materialised.
The updated policy underscores the importance of timely shipment execution and proactive booking management as carriers seek to optimise capacity and improve operational efficiency amid changing global shipping conditions.
