Maersk’s terminal operating arm has ordered 34 battery-electric yard cranes for operations at the Port of New York and New Jersey, marking a significant step toward reducing emissions and modernising cargo-handling equipment at the US gateway.
The new cranes will support container handling and yard operations, replacing or supplementing conventional diesel-powered equipment. Their deployment is expected to help reduce fuel consumption, local emissions and noise associated with terminal activities.
The investment forms part of the wider push by ports and terminal operators to electrify cargo-handling equipment as environmental regulations become more stringent and shipping companies work toward long-term decarbonisation targets.
The Port of New York and New Jersey is one of the largest container gateways on the US East Coast. Growing cargo volumes and the increasing importance of East Coast ports have encouraged terminal operators to invest in additional capacity, automation and cleaner equipment.
Battery-powered yard cranes can also improve operational efficiency by providing more predictable energy use and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The move is therefore expected to deliver both environmental and operational benefits as terminal activities become increasingly electrified.
The latest order highlights Maersk’s continued investment in terminal infrastructure and its broader strategy of integrating cleaner technologies across its logistics and port operations. The deployment of electric equipment at the New York-New Jersey gateway could also contribute to efforts to improve air quality around major port communities.
